The Lemur News!

We wrapped up our unit on Lemurs this week by finishing our lemur type books and creating our own “cycle story” called “If You Give a Lemur a Coconut.”  Next week we will be diving into the water cycle (another cycle!)

Group Work this week…

Monday
Science/Fine Motor – Lemur Book – Sifakas – They are so great at jumping, they even jump when they walk!  Students learned about the incredible sifakas and created a page for their lemur books.
Math – Pattern Blocks – Students watched this animation of Pat Hutchin’s classic book Changes, Changes and then used it as inspiration to create designs with pattern blocks.  We learned what the name of each shape it.
Literacy – Intro to cycle books – If you Give a Mouse a Cookie – For the first trimester, we will be talking a lot about different types of cycles.  We started by reading the book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff.  This book ends right where it begins.

Tuesday
Science/Fine Motor – Lemur Book – Mouse Lemur & Ruffed Lemurs – We learned about the smallest lemur, the adorable, super-fast mouse lemur.  Also, the only lemur that will tolerate being a pet, a ruffed lemur.  Students made pages for each for their lemur books.Image result for mouse lemur
Math – Multisensory Counts – Students took turns dropping different items into a tin coffee can while the rest of the group closed their eyes and counted in their heads.  Then students put items into a covered box and had to feel and count how many items were in the box.
Read-Aloud – If You Give a Pig a Party by Laura Numeroff

Wednesday
Literacy – Guided writing – If You GIve a Lemur a Coconut – Inspired by Laura Numeroff’s “If you GIve a…” books, students took turns authoring a page, building upon the previous student’s words.  In the end, we had our own cycle story (see the previous post for photos)
Math- Stinky CHeese game – Reach your hand in the paper sack and you might get a number…or you might get stinky cheese!  Students had to sequence numbers 1 – 20 before getting 3 stinky cheeses!
Science – Intro to the water cycle – evaporation –  We learned that we are drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank!  Earth’s water evaporated into the air, condensates into clouds, them precipitates back down to earth…over and over and over…it’s a cycle!  We made a cup of water transform into water vapor floating around our classroom just by warming it up.

Social Studies – The Pledge of Allegiance – Mrs. Swanson taught students the meaning behind the pledge of allegiance that we say each morning.  We learned why we should treat the flag with respect.  Students made their own flag for their family.
Fine Motor/Art – Illustrations for If You Give Lemur a Coconut – Using oil pastels and LOTS of details, students created an illustration for their page in the book we wrote.

Ducks in a Row

I am so excited for this school year, what a fantastic group of children!  We have had fun this week getting to know each other and learning all of the ins and outs of Junior Kindergarten.  We have a very busy day and there are many routines to understand and practice.  But these Lemurs have caught on quickly!  By the end of our short first week, we are walking in lines, staying to the right as we go up the stairs, taking care of our belongings, cleaning up after ourselves, raising our hands to ask questions…ready to take on the year!

Meet the Teachers Night

Thursday, August 29,  6:30 pm to 8:00 pm

Please plan to join us for this informational event as teachers will go over our schedule and curriculum we will be covering over the year.  This is also a great opportunity to ask questions!

This event is just for parents/caregivers, not for children.

Show & Share…the teacher’s week

This week Mrs. Swanson, myself, and Mrs. Riess (subbing for Mrs. Swanson) modeled for students how to present during Show & Share.  We each shared something about ourselves.  Mrs. Swanson brought in a snorkel and fins and talked about snorkeling with her family.  I brought in a monarch caterpillar that I found in my garden and talked about my butterfly garden.  Mrs. Riess brought in a photo of a 500 piece puzzle that she is working on and talked about using her “puzzle brain.”

The students practiced listening respectfully and then raising their hands to ask questions or make comments.  Next week we will begin having students’ Show & Share.  There is a calendar in your purple folder.  There is also a copy of the calendar hanging in our hallway.  I will email a reminder to you the day before your child’s Show & Share day.  Wednesday is our make-up day, so if your child is sick on their Show & Share day, or just forgets…they can make the day up on the next Wednesday.

The best items to bring are those that are interesting to your child and he/she will like to talk about.  It’s all about the talking!  I am there to help guide students and coax information out if needed.  I am looking forward to seeing all of the interesting Show & Shares this year 🙂
