The Lemur News! Week of Nov. 12 – Nov. 16

I hope you all enjoy Thanksgiving with your friends and families, we will see you back at school Nov. 26th!  As you read this, the Nocturnal Forest is being dis-assembled and our classroom is being transformed for our next unit….stop by our classroom and check it out, it will be far out! (that’s a clue)

On Thursday, Nov. 29th at 8:45am, the Quest Admissions team will be hosting an informational meeting about the WPPSI test required for Kindergarten admission.   There will be Meet & Greet with some testers that are available to schedule a test date with.  We ask that you schedule a testing date before contracts come out in February.  This is a great opportunity, I highly recommend at least one parent attends if you are unfamiliar with the test.  Image result for wppsi

Group Work this week,,,

Reader’s Theater Prep – The Three Bears – We talked about the different characters in the story of the Three Bears,  We looked at costumes we can use for the different roles.  We talked about props we would need and what we could use in the classroom.
Math – Graduated Bear Size – Taking all 8 different teddy bears out of our bear den, students measured them against each other to order them from biggest bear to smallest bear.  Students then explored other attributes of the bears that they could sort them by, eye color, fur color, etc.
Read-Aloud – Goldilocks and the Three Bears – We listened to a recording of Goldilocks and the Three bears while using felt pieces to act out the scenes.

Tuesday

Problem-Solving/Construction – Little Bear’s Chair – Using index cards, students were challenged to construct a little chair that would hold up baby bear (a little plastic bear) without collapsing.
Read-Aloud – The Three Snow Bears – We read a different version of the Three Bears story by Jan Brett.

Wednesday
Guided Reading – Students read one on one with a teacher at individual levels while rest of group used literacy apps on iPads.

The Lemur News! Week of Nov. 5 – Nov. 8

Image result for cold wind clip artIt does not look like it will snow again this week, but it does look cold!  Please make sure to send a warm hat and mittens to school.  We do have extras in case any get lost or forgotten.  Our outdoor recess policy is that we go outside if the wind chill temp is above 10 degrees.  I will send home a checklist for snow-clothes this week…this is the time to make sure you have gear that fits…while you can still find snowpants/boots in the store!

A reminder that Quest is closed for Fall Break Nov. 19 – 23, and Winter Break Dec. 24 – Jan. 4.  If your family plans on extending the breaks and will miss school, please send me an email so that I can mark it on my calendar.  Thank you!

Monday
Reading Comprehension – Henrietta’s Burrow – A little toy chipmunk made a burrow in our classroom over the weekend, preparing for the coming winter.  Students were so kind, making little books, clothing, and games for her so that she doesn’t get bored.  I read the story Henrietta’s First Winter by Rob Lewis.  We talked about how chipmunks hibernate through the winter, going into a deep sleep underneath the ground.
Math – Bears in a Cave Game –  This game is an introduction to subtraction concept.  Students began with a number of little plastic bears, then closed their eyes, Mrs. Swanson hid some bears inside a cave, children opened their eyes and figured out how many were hidden from how many were left.
Chipmunk Acorn Wars – We watched this incredible HD video from BBC of a chipmunk gathering acorns inside her burrow, only to be robbed by another chipmunk.

Tuesday
Math – Intro to Pan/bucket Balance –  Throughout the year we will be using our scales to compare weights of objects.  Students were introduced to how to use the pan/bucket balance and were then challenged to compare the weights of certain objects in our classroom.

Art – Making a Chipmunk Burrow – Using oil pastels, students created their own chipmunk burrow by drawing a cozy home inside the burrow and then disguising the outside with sticks and leaves to keep the chipmunk safe from a fox.
Read-Aloud – Bear Snores On -I read Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson.  Students helped with snoring sound effects as I read this classic book about a bear sleeping while other animals have a winter party in his cave.
Literacy – Bear Cave Sight Word Game-  – Inside a box decorated to look like a cave were 12 cards.  9 cards had common sight words on them, but 3 cards had bears on them.  Students took turns pulling a card…if they got a word, we needed to figure out the word…if they got a bear, they poked the bear!  3 pokes and he wakes up!

Wednesday
Guided Reading – Students read one on one with a teacher while the waiting students used literacy apps on the iPad.
Science – Bear Hibernation/ Bear Fat Experiment – Bears like to go swimming in icy cold water because they have a layer of thick fat under their thick fur.  We did an experiment by using a “mitten” lined with fat (Crisco) and plunging one mittened hand into icy water and one unpImage result for crisco bear mittenrotected hand in at the same time.  Students were amazed that the fat-mitten hand could not feel any cold!

Diwali – Aayan brought in 2 diyas and a pin of Ganesha to show the class.  We learned more about the beautiful festival of lights from this National Geographic video.

Thursday
Math – Roll & Record: Nut Race – Using a chart with 6 wintering animals labeled 1 – 6. student rolled a die and then recorded what number they rolled on the chart.  The first animal to reach the end of the chart won the nuts.
Science/Construction – Squirrel Food Storage – We learned how squirrels do not hibernate…they gather lots of food in the fall and then hide it all over their territory.  Squirrels use their amazing memories to locate their hidden food over the long winter.  Students created their own squirrel food storage out of cardboard, hid it someplace in our classroom and then gathered “nuts” (dried chickpeas) and stored them away for the winter.
Squirrel Pilot –  Students really enjoyed this video of a clever squirrel  who could fly a plane.
