Finished Auction Project

Our auction project is on display in the Main Building lobby…check it out!  Many hands were involved to create this racetrack and garage…a real team effort!  Thank you to Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Shutter for purchasing the wooden cars & garage.  Thank you to Mrs. Gersch for custom painting the cars with the Lemurs.  And thank you to my father and husband for helping me to design and construct the racetrack.

This incredibly cool project will be up for auction on the night of the Quest Gala, the Night of all Knights on March 9th.  You can also bid online at https://one.bidpal.net/questgala/

The Lemur News! Week Of Feb. 11 – Feb. 14

Monday
Red Riding Hood – Storytelling and Acting Out – Using a very old doll that was mine as a little girl, I told the tale of Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf.  Students then acted the story out with costumes and props. We also talked about the importance of not talking to strangers, and not telling strangers our name or where we live.
Valentine Card Count & Make – Students counted how many valentines they had made so far and figured out how many more they needed to make.  They then set to work gluing, cutting, and coloring.
Read-Aloud – Ninja Red Riding Hood by Corey Rosen Schwartz

Tuesday
100th Day!
Counting to 100 – We all practiced counting to 100.
Lining up and measuring 100 items – Students made a long line of the 100 items that they brought in to school.  We then measured the different lines with a very long measuring tape.
400 roll ice cream –  Using an ice cream “ball”, we added cream, sugar and vanilla.  After sealing it up, 2 groups rolled the ball on the floor, counting to 100 twice.  After 400 rolls, we had ice cream!
Read-Aloud – Little Red’s Riding ‘Hood by Peter Stein & Little Red Gliding Hood by Tara Lazar

Wednesday
Guided Reading/iPad Reading Apps – I read with students at individual levels while the others in the group used literacy apps on the iPads.
Math – Adding Wolf Teeth – Gramma, what big teeth you have!  Students took turns adding felt teeth to a felt wolf while others turned it into a number sentence.  5 teeth on top + 4 teeth on the bottom = 9 teeth!
Read-Aloud – Little Red Riding Hood – A Newfangled Prairie Tale by Lisa Campbell Ernst – This version of Red Riding Hood takes place in the Midwestern prairie.

Thursday
Valentines Day!
Minute to Win It – Valentine Hearts – Using little candy conversation hearts, students had 1 minute to stack as many as they could without the stack falling down.
Engineering Challenge: Red Riding Hood’s Valentine Zip Line – Red Riding Hood wants to send a valentine to Gramma without running into that wolf…so she built a zip line from her house to Gram’s house.  Students were given a paper clip and a little paper heart and were challenged to build a container for the heart that would travel down the zip line to Gram’s house.  We discovered that weight and bounce were important factors.

The Lemur News! Week of Feb. 4 – Feb. 8

Don’t forget this Tuesday is the 100th Day of school!  Be sure to bring in 100 items to school.  We have been practicing to count to 100 with these 2 catchy songs…

Miss Heidi’s Jumping Numbers

Count to 100 Song

Monday
New Unit! Wolf Attributes – We will be learning about the attributes of wolves in the wild as well as attributes of fairy tale wolves.  We will compare and contrast these very different wolves.  For our final project, students will write a new fairy tale, replacing the fairy tale wolf with a real wolf.

Today we read the story Wolf Watch by Kay Winters.  We learned how wolves live with their family (a pack) inside of a den.  They all work together and help each other out much like our own families do.
Math – February Calendar – Students practiced number writing for the February calendar.

Tuesday
Fairy Tale Wolf – The Three Little Pigs – We used the felt board to tell the story of the 3 Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf.  Students then sequenced the story with pictures from the tale.
Math – Number Sentences – Using pictures of animals from the book Animals All Together, students composed number sentences.  They then created their own illustrated animal number sentence.
Reader’s Theater – The Three Little Pigs –  We acted out the story of the Three Little Pigs with costumes and props!

Wednesday
Guided Reading – I read with each student at individual levels and updated book bags.
Valentine Studio – We have a studio dedicated to creating cards for our friends.  It is fully stocked with lots of craft items.
Read-Aloud – The Three Little Dassies by Jan Brett –  A different version of the 3 Pig story that takes place in Africa.

Thursday
Move-Up Day! – Students visited Kindergarten classrooms!
Read-Aloud – The First Dog by Jan Brett – Fantastic book that shows how many of the attributes of dogs come from wolves.

Friday
Math – Games with Attribute Blocks – Attribute blocks have different colors, shapes, size, and widths.  We played several games sorting the blocks by a different attribute.
Problem-Solving – Building a Wolf-Proof Stick House – The second little pig enlisted our help to build a stick house that the wolf (a blow dryer disguised as a wolf) couldn’t blow down!  We used popsicle sticks and tape.

Read-Aloud – The Three Ninja Pigs – A different version of the 3 Pig story.  I love how the third little pig in this story teaches her brothers the benefits of perseverance and hard work.  She would definitely get an industry badge in the Lemur class!
