The Lemur News! Week of Dec. 19 – 23

I hope everyone is enjoying the Winter Break!  We had such a busy week last week, I have lots of great photos to share.  A GIGANTIC thank you to our room parents who threw a great party for the Lemurs on Friday!  We all had a lot of fun.

We send home a big bag-of-stuff last week.  Make sure you go through the bag with your child if you have not already…it was full of wonderful things that your child worked hard to create.  Also gifts from myself and Mrs. Kirsh and Mrs. Swanson.  Ask your child to walk you through their solar system book, I am so proud of how much they learned about each planet.

When we return to Quest in January, the Lemur room will be transformed for our next thematic unit.  Here is a clue…”wet and green.”

Game – Stomple – Students played this game again, as they are learning to use strategy.

Wednesday
Math – Nutcracker Math – Students reviewed math concepts we have covered this year using Nutcracker themed math activities.
Reading – Elves and the Shoemaker – Students acted out the story today, wearing costumes and taking turns as roles.  The Lemurs enjoyed this so much that they did it again during Centers!

Math – Shoemaker Shop – The Lemurs were entrepreneurs today!  Each child was given $1 to start a shoe business.  Leather cost $1.  They could buy a piece of leather with their dollar, use it to make a pair of shoes, and then sell those shoes for $2.  They could then buy 2 pieces of leather, make 2 pair of shoes, and then sell those shoes for $4.  Some children grew their $1 into $8!

The Lemur News! Week of Dec. 2 – Dec. 9

This Tuesday at 8:45am the Lemurs will be performing their Winter Concert in the gym.  Parents and family are invited to come watch, the show will last about 45 minutes.

This past week, all of Quest participated in the “Hour of Code.”  All students did a coding activity from 2:30 – 3:30 on Thursday.  An hour is a long time for 4 – 5 year olds to be coding, so our class worked on LightBot Jr. in shifts of 15 minutes.  Each child was given a certificate of participation.  We also did 2 coding activities earlier this week during treehouses.  Students learned how to play the coding game Daisy the Dino.  We also got to look at what LEGO Robotics programming looks like, we saw how the programming language tells the robot what to do.  Beginning in Kindergarten, students are able to take LEGO robotics classes afterschool through Chasewood Learning.

Treehouse Small Group Activities for the Week:.

Monday
Holiday – Saint Nick: Mrs. Kirsh taught children about the German Saint Nick who visits children at night and fills their socks with sweets.  She worked with students to sew their own stocking and hand on the board.  The next day the stocking were filled with gold coins!
Math– Connect the Dots: Students worked on 1 – 10, 1- 25 and 1 – 100 connect the dot pages.
Science/Art: Space Book – Mars: – We learned about the cold red planet close to us on Earth.  We learned that rovers live on Mars taking photos and samples of rock, so that we can learn more about this dusty planet.  One day we might send an astronaut to Mars.  Students created a Mars page for their Space Book.

Tuesday
Reading – Guided Reading: Students worked one on one with a teacher reading at individual levels.
Math- Top It: Students played a number game with cards, similar to the popular card game “War”
Science/Technology – LEGO Mars Rover: – My son lent us his LEGO Mindstorm that he built to resemble a Mars Rover.  He created a program for the robot to use a color sensor to search for “life” on Mars (a green LEGO.)  After students looked at the code and played with the robot, they created their own mini version of a LEGO rover.

Wednesday
Reading/Art: What the Dinosaurs Did in the Lemur Room:  Mrs. Kirsh read students the incredible photograpy book, What the Dinosaurs Did Last Night.  Students then worked in groups to compose and shoot a photograph using plastic dinosaurs in the Lemur Room.
Coding: Daisy the Dino: Students played the game Daisy the Dino on iPads.  This is a good introduction to logic and programming.
Science/Art: Space Book – Asteroid Belt: Students created a page in their space books for the asteroid belt that separates the inner planets from the outer planets.

Thursday
Art: Helmets and Little Houses:  While Mrs. Kirsh worked with one student at a time creating their paper mache helmet, other students created a little cardboard house.
Math: Probability Dinosaurs:  STudents did a second activity using probability vocabulary (certain, likely, unlikely, impossible)  Using different colored dinosaurs, student had to say the probability that they would pick a certain color with their eyes closed.
Science/Art: Space Book – Jupiter:  We learned about the largest of the gas giants, Jupiter.  Students created a page for Jupiter in their space books.

Friday
Reading: Elephant and Piggie:  Mrs. Swanson read the book Elephant and Piggie: My Friend is Sad by Mo Willems.  She used the book to teach students about how punctuation effects the way the reader reads the book.  We learned how to change our voice is there is a period, question mark, or exclamation mark.  Then the children read the book back, each child having a part in the story.
Game: Recall:  We revisited this memory game, this time teaching children a memory “trick.”  Before playing, students came up with a story for each image.  This creates a connection in their minds when they see the image again.  Students then played the game and found that they were able to more easily remember the images!
Science/Art: Space Book – Saturn:  We learned that the rings around Saturn are made up of chucks of ice and rock spinning around this giant gas planet.  Light from the sun reflects off of the ice and makes the rings visible to us on Earth.  Students created a page for Saturn in their space books.
